Sixth grade students put their STEM skills to the test as they coded robots the week ahead of the mid-winter recess.

“They have to incorporate angles, so they’re using math, and they have to determine length in centimeters, so they have to measure, they really learn how to multitask,” explained teacher Lisa Mabbett.

The students use a coding program called Blockly, which helps them create the commands that will power the robots. Mabbett said they learned all they needed to know within one week.

The students first had to code the robots to drive around blocks set up on the floor, then they had to code the robots to collect those blocks. In their final lesson, students used the robots as catapults to launch cubes into a hoop.
