Weedsport Central School District has received two seals from New York State, which will lead to more academic opportunities for students.
The first is the Seal of Biliteracy, which recognizes students who have studied and attained a high proficiency in more than one language by their high school graduation. If students choose to work towards receiving the Seal of Biliteracy, they present in their second language in front of a panel of teachers during either their junior or senior year. The presentation will test the student’s interpretive, interpersonal and presentational skills. If they are awarded the Seal of Biliteracy, students will receive a special medallion to wear during graduation.
The second seal students can work towards is the Seal of Civic Readiness. This offers students a different pathway to graduation. Students have the opportunity to participate in a capstone project that builds upon their civic skills, and gives them the chance to make a positive difference in their community.
“These provide students with the unique opportunity to show what they know beyond the usual standardized test,” explained Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Melinda Ervay.
