Last Tuesday, September 22, our freshmen and sophomore students took field trips to college campuses around Upstate New York. The two classes split into four groups – each group visited a different college campus. The colleges included SUNY Geneseo, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, LeMoyne College, and Syracuse University.

“Our goal running the college visit field trip is to offer students an opportunity to see a variety of college campuses and the opportunities they offer,” said Jessica Bradtke, School Counselor. “At each campus, students participate in a tour, academic information session, and lunch on campus.”

This recurring field trip offers our younger students a chance to visualize a college campus and what the experience could be from an academic and lifestyle perspective. Taking this trip in the early years of high school allows them a chance to begin thinking about opportunities they might want to look into.

“One of our favorite takeaways is when a student shares with us that they now see that they could go to college or that they’ve learned of a new career path they hadn’t explored,” said Bradtke. “Our students did a great job while on campus. They asked great questions in the information sessions and thoroughly enjoyed lunch – everyone’s highlight of the day.”

For our freshmen and sophomores, the day was more than just a field trip – it was an opportunity to begin imagining what their post-Weedsport lives could look like. Hopefully these experiences will inspire our students to explore their interests, consider new possibilities, and take the steps toward finding the path that is right for them.
